The Institute of Nuclear Medicine 1. LF UK and VFN is one of the largest workplaces of its type in the Czech Republic and provides examinations in the entire spectrum of nuclear medicine diagnostics as well as therapy in outpatient mode. "Interdisciplinary specialized groups for rare endocrinological oncological syndromes, the issue of advanced prostate cancer diagnosis and for the selection of patients suitable for radionuclide treatment of neuroendocrine tumors meet regularly at the workplace." represents the workplace of MUDr. David Zogala, Ph.D., Head of the Institute of Nuclear Medicine 1st Faculty of Medicine, UK and VFN.

 

PET/CT in modern tumor diagnosis

PET/CT technology is considered the most modern method in cancer diagnosis. It combines positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT) examinations. The new PET/CT machine (specifically the GE MI 5 DR model) outperforms the previous system in all these key parameters. "With appropriate process settings, it enables more patients to be examined, with better image quality, and therefore with higher diagnostic accuracy, while also reducing their radiation exposure. From the patient's point of view, it may be welcome that the actual imaging takes less time," enumerates the benefits of the new technology, head MUDr. David Zogala. 

 

Gamma cameras advance diagnostics further

In addition to PET/CT, the Institute of Nuclear Medicine of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of the UK and VFN has renewed the equipment for conventional nuclear medicine. With the support of the EU-REACT program, two gamma cameras were replaced with new GE NM 830 and GE NM/CT 870 DR models. Doctors use them to image internal organs and their function using radioactively labeled medicinal products, so-called radiopharmaceuticals. They can look for metastases, examine the lungs, kidneys, digestive tract, some glands with internal secretion or detect certain neurological disorders. Last but not least, examinations play an important role in the diagnosis of ischemic heart disease.

The ceremonial opening of the modernized diagnostic center, including the ribbon cutting, took place on 19 December 2023 with the participation of the management of the General University Hospital in Prague, the 1st Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University and the management of the Institute of Nuclear Medicine.
