Workplace characteristics
The Ophthalmic Clinic of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of the UK and VFN provides comprehensive care in the field of ophthalmology.
As part of specialized centers with nationwide scope, the workplace ensures:
- Cataract surgery including implantation of superior artificial lenses,
- conservative and surgical treatment of glaucoma,
- corneal and amniotic membrane transplants,
- diagnosis and research of hereditary eye diseases,
- diagnosis and targeted treatment of uveitis, including masking syndromes,
- brachytherapy of eye tumors,
- laser and vitreoretinal surgery of eye complications of diabetes, retinal diseases and circulatory disorders,
- pharmacological treatment of macular diseases (injection into the vitreous),
- diagnosis of disorders of the visual pathway, solution of orbital expansions, injuries and endocrine orbitopathy with the use of multidisciplinary cooperation.
The clinic includes highly specialized centers that are unique in the Czech Republic in terms of the scope of their activities and the qualifications of their staff - the Center for Corneal Transplantation, the Center for Diagnosis and Treatment of Uveitis, the Center for Clinical Eye Genetics, the Macular Center, the Diabetic Eye Center and the Neuro-Ophthalmology and Orbital Center.
The eye clinic uses a wide range of routinely established modern diagnostic and therapeutic methods. These include, for example, imaging techniques:
- Photo of the fundus with a wide-angle camera,
- analysis of the retina and target of the optic nerve by optical coherence tomography,
- injection of corticosteroids and antibodies against growth factors into the vitreous for selected retinal diseases,
- or diagnostic and differential diagnostic sampling of eye fluid and vitreous for cytological, histopathological, microbiological, immunological, molecular and biochemical examination of pathological conditions of the eye.
In cooperation with other clinics, the workplace provides post-traumatic treatment and treatment in general, as well as examination and treatment of ocular manifestations of general diseases (especially diabetes), as well as examination and counseling of patients with hereditary eye diseases.
In addition to a wide range of services covered by contractual insurance companies, the clinic also offers special examinations, therapy and aesthetic procedures not covered by health insurance or with partial patient participation. The clinic does not perform laser correction of refractive errors.
A number of clinical trials of newly developed therapies are ongoing at the clinic.
From 10/10/2024, the Ophthalmology Clinic of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of the Charles University and VFN in Prague is the first and only Eye Gene Therapy Center in the Czech Republic.
