How to prevent uterine cancer?
As part of this year's global day of oncogynecological diagnoses, GO DAY, a press conference was held on Friday, September 20, 2024, at which experts from the Department of Gynecology, Obstetrics and Neonatology of the 1st Faculty of Medicine, UK and VFN focused on uterine cancer.
Cancer of the uterus or endometrium is the most common gynecological tumor in the Czech Republic. The disease affects 1,850 women annually, of which 350 die. The main risk factors for developing uterine cancer are age, overweight and obesity. Gynecologists from VFN appeal to women over fifty not to neglect regular check-ups with a gynecologist, not to underestimate vaginal bleeding after menopause, and to take care of a healthy lifestyle and plenty of exercise. Hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) continues to be the main part of the treatment of uterine cancer, the majority of procedures performed by the Department of Gynecology, Obstetrics and Neonatology of the 1st Faculty of Medicine of the UK and VFN are performed laparoscopically and with new robotic methods without the need for invasive open surgery. The novelty is a breakthrough immunological treatment that fundamentally improves the prognosis of patients with an advanced stage of the disease and recurrence, and a molecular examination that enables effective targeting of treatment according to the type of tumor.
