The pandemic worsened the health of the Czechs by up to 30%!
Less exercise, overweight, inappropriate diet and higher alcohol consumption during a pandemic are factors that certainly did not benefit our population last year. Add to that the postponement of preventive and planned examinations and medical interventions - and the result is a significant worsening of heart, lung and mental illnesses, as well as diseases of the digestive system.
Up to 25% of adults in the Czech Republic suffer from gallstones. If "gallbladder" problems occur, the patient should undergo surgical removal of the gallbladder as soon as possible. If the planned operation, or even the initial examination, is postponed, serious complications may occur which prolong the hospitalization of patients and the length of their incapacity for work and very often require further treatment.
Twice more hospitalizations for gallstone complications are reported by the General Hospital for the period April – May 2021 and 50% more endoscopic procedures for the release of gallstones in the same period. Both compared to April-May 2020.
Equally alarming is the current situation with liver disease. Our population suffers from two basic diagnoses that lead to cirrhosis: liver damage from alcohol and damage from excessive fat storage.
The number of hospitalizations for liver diseases related to fatty liver in the VFN increased by 50% in the period April – May 2021 compared to the same period in 2020.
About 8% of the population in the Czech Republic has a damaged liver due to excessive alcohol consumption. The isolation period during the pandemic increased the risk of harmful drinking, which is an amount exceeding 1-2 beer, or 2 dcl of wine or 1-2 small glasses of distillate per day.
100% more hospitalizations for liver diseases related to alcohol damage took place in the General Hospital for the period April – May 2021 compared to the same period in 2020!
