Project brief:

The aim of the project is to establish an accessible, unique and prestigious bariatric workplace focusing on the treatment of patients with particularly severe obesity, which will be technologically equipped in accordance with the most modern approaches in medicine. The center will provide a significant increase in the range of care provided for particularly at-risk bariatric patients whose quality of life and health have been adversely affected in connection with COVID-19.

In cooperation with the General University Hospital in Prague (VFN) and the Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine (IKEM), a unique and irreplaceable center will be created not only for Prague and the Central Bohemian Region, but also for the entire Czech Republic. The construction of the center and its modern equipment will create more suitable conditions in case of the need for a barrier regime not only for COVID-19 infections, but also other similar situations. The center will have the possibility of isolating patients and equipment that will limit the possibility of infection transmission between patients and at the same time provide maximum nursing facilities as a prerequisite for tighter anti-infective protection.

In accordance with the memorandum on mutual cooperation in the construction of the Center, VFN will provide interdisciplinary care for obese and especially obese patients with other comorbidities, the management of acute conditions and early rehabilitation. IKEM will focus on the treatment of obesity in relation to transplants, advanced forms of heart failure and other intervention methods.

Part of the project is a complete reconstruction of the metabolic ICU department at III. internal clinic, which will enable the expansion of the care provided to bariatric patients and patients with particularly severe obesity.

As part of the project, the instrumentation will be renewed with regard to the specifics of bariatric patients at II. surgical clinic, III. Department of Internal Medicine, Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics and Department of Rehabilitation Medicine.

The project budget is a total of CZK 100,000,000, of which 70% will be financed from the European Regional Development Fund, 20% from the state budget of the Czech Republic and 10% from the VFN's own resources in Prague.
