The cannulation center is established primarily for the introduction of long-term intravenous approaches from the periphery of the upper (lower) limb to the central venous system - the so-called PICC ("peripherally inserted central catheters") lines.
These catheters are indicated in the following states:
- any need for intravenous (infusion) treatment for more than 2 weeks
- chemotherapy
- long-term iv antibiotic treatment
- parenteral nutrition
- other indications (repeated iv administration of certain drugs)
The performances are performed on an outpatient basis, using state-of-the-art procedures and strictly controlled by ultrasound navigation, which allows the vessel to cannulate mostly on the first attempt and without major trauma or pain.
